The Folk Festival in Východná, which for more than 50 years has been an illustrious pageant thanks to the systematic work of many institutions, organizations, associations and individuals in the fi eld of traditional folk art, enters the second half century of its existence with the opening of the new natural amphitheater. After the absence of the 52nd year of the Festival in 2006 caused by the unfi nished construction of the amphitheater, the expert and lay public are tingling with anticipation of its “introduction” to life.

The organizers of the Festival – the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, the National Center for Further Education, the Žilina Self-Governing Region – the Liptov Center for Further Education and the Municipality of Východná have continued in the preparation of the 53rd year of this Festival as in previous years, particularly regarding its tried and tested programs, accompanying events and leisure-time activities that are always attractive to the audience. The Východná Folk Festival is a signifi cant national cultural event with a long tradition which surpassed its regional and national signifi cance a long time ago. The 53rd year of the Festival should fi nally establish itself as an International Folk Festival, not only due to the performance of several foreign ensembles but also as a result of the participation of foreign guests and representatives of signifi cant international organizations (UNESCO, ECTC, CIOFF, IOV) and folk festivals.

We believe that all of the programs and events of the 53rd year of the Východná Folk Festival will not only be a celebration of colorful folklore, but a pleasant entry to the summer season of holidays and vacations. This season starts for all those who meet in the surroundings of the natural beauty of the High Tatras and Východná, not only with its panorama of the grand peak of Kriváň and the Tatras, but also with good music, wild dance and the vivid colors of folk costumes.

The Festival will be held under the auspices of Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic.
